Managing Education for Prevention of Corruption in Nigerian Political System: Issues and Challenges

Abstract

This paper focused on managing education for prevention of corruption in Nigerian political system. Issues pertaining to corruption in Nigeria’s politics, and educational management were discussed. The paper identified the challenges in managing education for prevention of corrupt political and electoral practices, and suggested the way forward. The paper concluded that the prevention of corrupt political and electoral practices in Nigeria’s political system would be difficult except there is effective management of the educational system. Education has been implicated as effecting national development; thus, the agent of political development. Changes in the political system affect the school, which demands that the school curriculum reflects this change. For this change to be meaningful there is need to manage education that will drive it. Hence funds, personnel, facilities, curriculum, among others should be effectively managed to bring about a corruption free society. Better management of our educational system will no doubt lead to the prevention of corruption in Nigeria’s national politics. Important suggestions made among others were that government should include values/moral education in the curriculum from pre-school to university level in order to teach that corrupt practices and other forms of evil do not pay; school curriculum should be reviewed to accommodate the teaching and assessment of the affective characteristics of students; the educational system should be adequately funded for the attainment of national goals.
