Abstract

The world is currently experiencing an unusual pandemic of a novel infectious disease which has significantly disrupted the education sector. The pandemic which is formally referred to as COVID-19 has affected all aspects of life in society leading to the closure of schools, worship centres, markets, financial institutions, etcetera. To sustain tertiary education in the face of these anomalies, a virtual form of learning has been adjudged to be better than the usual face-to-face interactions since it has the advantage of reaching out to many students at the same time and does not require them to converge under the same roof. To promote excellence and achieve lifelong learning in school, education stakeholders have important roles in order to ensure that the pandemic does not disrupt the educational system. This paper suggested that advocacy, enlightenment programmes, mobilization of funds and training and retraining of staff and students are necessary measures that stakeholders have to adopt to encourage e-learning among students to avoid a total breakdown of tertiary education which is widely acknowledged as a veritable tool for sustainable nations development. It further suggested that educational stakeholders should invest in the sector by providing higher institutions affordable mobile phones and creating access to digital services and other information and communication technological facilities. Also, staff and students should be trained to be inclined with ICT knowledge through a capacity-building programme. The incorporation of these measures absolutely has the tendency to achieve the targets of sustainable development goals -4 in Nigeria.
