Abstract

The study examined the Management of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programmes for the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal “5” (Gender Parity) in Universities in Rivers State. Three research questions were answered while three corresponding null hypotheses were formulated and tested at a 0.05 level of significance to guide the study. The study adopted the descriptive research survey design. The population of the study was 23,976 STEM students (RSU = 11,788; UNIPORT = 12,188). A sample size of 773 students (RSU = 386; UNIPORT = 387) was obtained multistage sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was a self-structure questionnaire tagged “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Programmes for the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 5 Questionnaire (STEMASDGs)”. The reliability of the instrument was established to be 0.84 using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) coefficient. Data collected were analysed using mean with standard deviation for research questions and z-test for test of null hypotheses. The study found that gender parity benefits society and that causes of gender parity include low parental motivation and negative image of females involved in STEM. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that there should be a re-orientation campaign within and outside university campuses. Provide employment for the best female STEM graduating students as well as giving scholarships such as reducing cut-off points, and discounts in school fee payments for female STEM applicants and students.
