Abstract

The study investigated strategies for enhancing community education for sustainable community development in the face of Covid 19 pandemic in Rivers State. The objectives of the study were to determine the strategies for enhancing life-long education, community involvement in schools, use of community resources for sustainable community development in the face of Covid 19 pandemic. Three research questions were posed to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. This design was employed because the study obtained the opinion of a population of people to describe a situation. The population of the study comprised of all adult and community education lecturers in Rivers State Universities. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 25 adult and community development lecturers in Rivers State Universities. The instrument used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire titled “Strategies for Enhancing Community Education for Sustainable Community Development in the Face of Covid 19 Pandemic Questionnaire”. The instrument was validated by experts in community development. The reliability of the instrument was established using the Cronbach Alpa reliability formula. The reliability coefficient obtained was 0.77. Descriptive statistics (Mean and Standard Deviation) were used in answering the research questions. The study found that continuous organization of socio-economic empowerment programmes, agricultural extension programmes for improved farmers' productivity, integrating Parent-Teachers Association to address community problems using the school, utilization of community resources for practical teaching and learning, encouraging hand sanitization before and after usage of any general facilities, provision of adequate infrastructural facilities to reduce sharing of basic amenities among others are the strategies for enhancing community education for sustainable community development in the face of Covid-19 in Rivers State. It was recommended among others that Government and community heads should establish skill acquisition centres in the communities to enhance the economic empowerment of youths.
