Attitude and Self-Concept as Predictors of Lecturers’ Political Orientation in Public Universities in Rivers State

Abstract

The study investigated attitude and self-concept as predictors of lecturers’ political orientation in public Universities in Rivers State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were answered and tested in this study. The study adopted a correlation research design. The population of the study was 147 (UPH-78, RSU-39 and IAUOE 30) Head of Departments in the three public Universities in Rivers State. The three Universities have 25 (UPH-12, RSU-7 and IAUOE 6) faculties respectively (Source: Academic and Planning Units, 2021). The sample size of the study is 117 (UPH-62, RSU-31 and IAUOE-24) Head of Departments in the three public Universities in Rivers State. Three instruments titled Political Orientation Scale (POS), Attitude Scale (AS) and Self-concept Scale (SS) were used for data collection. The instruments were face validated by three experts. Two of them are from Educational Psychology while the other one is from Measurement and Evaluation, all from Ignatius Ajuru University. Linear regression was used to answer the research questions while t-test associated with linear regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that attitude and self-esteem of lecturers are significant predictors of their political orientations in public Universities in Rivers State. It was therefore recommended that political orientation programme should be organized by the lecturers’ in Political Science Departments in order to reposition the negative attitude of intending administrative and public office holders in the Universities in Rivers State. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher further recommended that Google forms should be floated by the deans in each of the faculties to allow lecturers rate each other in order to correct their impressions about their self-image in Universities in Rivers State.
