Abstract

The study investigated politics in the management of higher education and tertiary education goals attainment in Rivers State. Three specific objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population of the study was 1224 comprising 421 academic staff from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, 241 academic staff from Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic and 562 academic staff from Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic. The sample size of 300 academic staff was derived using a proportionate sampling technique. Two different self-structured questionnaires titled: “Politics in the Management of Higher Education Questionnaire” and “Tertiary Education Goals Attainment Questionnaire” were used as instruments for data collection. The instruments were face and content validated by two experts in Measurement and Evaluation and the Department of Educational Management respectively in Rivers State University. The instruments were tested for reliability using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded reliability indexes of 0.74, 0.82, 0.78 and 0.88. Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics were used in answering the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using t-Transformation at 0.05 level of significance with a critical t-value of ±1.96. Findings revealed that a negative, high and significant relationship exists between politics in staff employment, appointment of principal officers and students’ admission and tertiary education goals attainment in Rivers State. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that the governing council and senate of higher institutions should be allowed to appoint principal officers with a view to selecting well-qualified seasoned academics whose high administrative pedigree would be readily brought to bear on tertiary goals attainment in the most efficient and effective mode of operation.
